Why engineering students get rejected for regular cards
| What banks check | What most engineering students have |
|---|---|
| Salary slips or ITR | Pocket money, maybe a stipend |
| CIBIL score | "-1" or "NH" (no history) |
| Stable address | Hostel or PG, home in another city |
That's not a bad record; it's no record. Read what CIBIL -1 and NH mean.
How the FD card works for you
- Open an FD of ₹2,000 or more in your own name.
- Get a credit card with a limit linked to the FD, usually a large share of it.
- Your FD keeps earning interest the whole time.
- Use the card lightly and pay the full bill each month.
- Your repayments are reported to credit bureaus, building your score.
You need PAN, Aadhaar linked to your mobile, a bank account and ₹2,000. No college ID, salary slip or guarantor. See the full documents checklist.
The placement advantage
| When you start | What you'll have by placements |
|---|---|
| First year | About three years of credit history |
| Second year | About two years |
| Third year | A year or more |
| Final year | A first score, usually after about six months |
When you join a company, a ready CIBIL score makes it easier to get a regular card, a laptop or two-wheeler loan, or a rental agreement in a new city. Freshers who start from zero often get rejected right when they need credit most. See our page for freshers.
What engineering students use the card for
- Online courses and certifications, if they fit within your limit
- Coding practice platforms and cloud trial subscriptions
- Mobile recharge and data
- Train tickets home before semester breaks, paid off fast
Keep hostel fees, mess, fests and daily spending on UPI. That keeps your card balance low, which matters for your score. Read how much limit a ₹2,000 FD gives.
Habits that build a strong score
- Autopay the total amount due, never just the minimum.
- Keep spending under 30% of your limit, ideally under 10%.
- Never share your OTP, CVV or PIN, even with hostel friends.
- Don't apply for several cards after placement offers arrive.

Example
Arjun, a second-year B.Tech student in Bhubaneswar, opened a ₹2,000 FD card and used it only for a ₹299 recharge and a coding platform subscription, with autopay. By his final year he had a CIBIL score above 750. When he joined a company in Hyderabad, he was approved for a regular card within weeks of his first salary.

Frequently asked questions
Can a B.Tech student get a credit card without income?
Yes. A card against a fixed deposit of ₹2,000 or more needs no income, only PAN, Aadhaar and the FD.
Is it worth getting a card before placements?
Yes. A score built in college helps you get a regular card, a laptop or bike loan, or a rented flat soon after you join a company.
Can I use it for online courses and certifications?
Yes, if the fee fits comfortably within your limit. Keep total spending under 30% of the limit.
I'm on an internship with a stipend. Do I need to show it?
No. The FD secures the card, so stipend or salary details aren't needed.
Will my parents' income be checked?
No. The card is in your name and secured by your own FD.
