Why students have no CIBIL score
CIBIL builds your score from loans and cards. If you've never had either, your report shows NH (no history) or -1. That's normal for students. Read more in what CIBIL -1 or NH means.
How to get your first card anyway
- Open a fixed deposit of ₹2,000 or more.
- Get a card against it. No history or income is checked for approval.
- Use it lightly and pay in full every month.
- The bank reports your card every month, and your score is created.
Add-on card vs your own FD card
An add-on card on a parent's account is convenient, but the history belongs to the main cardholder. Your own FD card builds your record. See the full comparison: student card vs add-on card.
Common first-card mistakes
- Paying only the minimum due and building up interest
- Using the full limit every month
- Applying to several banks at once
- Sharing card details or OTPs with friends
Who usually starts with no history
Almost everyone: college students, students who just turned 18, hostel and PG students and coaching aspirants.
Frequently asked questions
Can a student get a credit card with no credit history?
Yes. A card against a fixed deposit needs no credit history, because the FD secures it.
What does NH or -1 on my CIBIL report mean?
It means there isn't enough history to calculate a score. It is not a bad mark, just an empty record.
Is an add-on card enough to build my score?
Usually not. An add-on card is linked to the main cardholder's account, so it doesn't build a separate score in your name.
How soon will I get a score?
Credit bureaus usually need a few months of activity. Keep using the card and paying on time, and a score will appear.
