FD credit card for students: how it works

An FD credit card is a regular credit card issued against a fixed deposit. Because the FD is the security, the bank doesn't need your income, which is why it is the easiest way for a student to get a first card. Start with just ₹2,000.

What is an FD credit card?

It works like any other credit card: pay in shops, online and on apps, and get a monthly bill. The difference is how you qualify. A normal card depends on salary and credit score; an FD card depends on your fixed deposit. That's why students, who have neither, can get one. Read more in what an FD credit card is.

How the FD and the card are linked

  • The FD is security. It stays in your name and is held by the bank while the card is active.
  • Your limit is linked to the FD, usually a large share of the amount. See how much limit a ₹2,000 FD gives.
  • The FD keeps earning interest like any fixed deposit.
  • It's only used if you don't pay. Pay on time and it is never touched.

Why it suits students

  • No income needed: no salary slip, no parents' ITR.
  • Your own card: unlike an add-on card, it builds a score in your name. Compare student card vs add-on card.
  • Low risk: the limit is tied to your own savings, so overspending is hard.
  • Early credit history: start at 18 and graduate with a score banks trust.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum FD for a student credit card?

The minimum FD is ₹2,000. A bigger FD gives you a higher limit.

How much limit will I get?

The limit is linked to your FD, usually a large share of it such as 75% to 90%. The bank shows the exact limit when you apply.

Do I earn interest on the FD?

Yes. The FD earns the bank's normal FD interest while it backs your card.

Can my parents pay the FD for me?

The FD has to be in your name. Many students use money from parents, scholarships or savings to open it.

Can I upgrade to a normal card later?

Many people qualify for regular credit cards after 6 to 12 months of on-time payments, depending on the bank's rules at the time.
