Why part-time earners get rejected
| What banks want | What part-time students usually have |
|---|---|
| Salary slips or Form 16 | Cash or UPI payments |
| ITR | Often not filed yet |
| Regular monthly credit | Irregular amounts and dates |
| CIBIL score | No history |

How the FD card solves it
- Open an FD of ₹2,000 or more in your own name.
- Get a credit card with a limit linked to the FD.
- No income checks: the FD covers the bank's risk.
- Your FD keeps earning interest.
- On-time payments build your CIBIL score.
You need PAN, Aadhaar linked to your mobile, a bank account in your name and ₹2,000. See the documents checklist.
What working students use the card for
- Internet or phone bills you need for work
- One software or app subscription, such as a design tool
- Online orders for small work supplies
- Travel bookings, paid off quickly
If you earn a little more, a slightly bigger FD gives more room while keeping usage under 30% of the limit. Read how much limit a ₹2,000 FD gives.
Turning informal income into a strong profile
Your FD card builds one half of a strong credit profile: the repayment history. You can build the other half alongside it:
- Receive payments in one account in your name, so your income is easy to see.
- File an ITR if your income is taxable.
- Pay your card bill in full every month by autopay.
- Check your CIBIL report after about six months.
After a year, a good score plus some income on paper usually opens the door to regular cards. Read our CIBIL plan for students.
Mistakes to avoid when you earn irregularly
- Spending future income on the card before it arrives.
- Paying only the minimum in a slow month. Keep a small buffer instead.
- Using the card for big work purchases that push you near the limit.
Example
Farhan, 21, studies B.A. in Lucknow and earns from evening tuition, paid in cash and UPI. A bank turned down his card application because he had no salary slip. He opened a ₹2,000 FD card, put his ₹399 internet bill on it with autopay, and started depositing his tuition income into one account. A year later he had a CIBIL score in the high 700s and had filed his first ITR.

Frequently asked questions
I earn from tuition but have no salary slip. Can I get a credit card?
Yes. A card against a fixed deposit doesn't need salary slips or ITR, only PAN, Aadhaar and the FD.
My income comes through UPI from different people. Is that a problem?
Not for an FD card. The bank doesn't assess your income, because the FD secures the card.
Can I use the card for work expenses?
Yes, for small ones like a software subscription or internet bill, as long as you pay in full each month.
Should I file an ITR?
If your income is taxable, yes. An ITR plus a good CIBIL score helps you qualify for regular cards later.
Will a bigger FD help?
A bigger FD gives a bigger limit, which helps if you have more regular bills. Your score depends on paying on time and keeping usage low.
